Cesnica (Serbian Christmas Bread)


1 heaped soup spoon vegetable shortening
1 package active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
3˝ cups all-purpose flour

1. Mix the yeast and shortening with warm water in a large bowl until the yeast has completely dissolved
2. Add the flour and salt, then mix until the dough comes clean away from the bowl and hands. May need to add additional flour
3. In a greased bowl add the dough mix and cover
4. Allow to double in size, then punch down on the dough
5. On a floured surface place the dough and knead until shinny. (Traditionally a silver coloured coin is added. Sterilize by boiling for 3 minutes.)
6. On a greased baking tray, shape the dough into a round shape
7. On the top of the dough make 4 slight slits from the centre
8. Allow to double in size
9. In a preheated oven of 350°F/180°C bake the dough for approximately 40 minutes
10 Allow to cool on a wire rack.
